*Please note that you can submit work to both the general submission and the new N E W wave submission. All we ask is that you do not submit the same pieces to both categories.
Alongside our general call for submissions, Laurus is seeking submissions for our special portfolio issue: the new N E W wave. Inspired by the poppy visuals that existed alongside icons such as Grace Jones and further popularized by the artwork of April Greiman, Dan Friedman, and Wolfgang Weingart, we want to publish your poppiest, boldest, and most eccentric pieces yet.
Despite the original musical new wave subculture during the late 1970s and early 1980s arriving as a commodification of punks, the new N E W wave calls for a counter to commodification – bold rawness in even the most camp of places.
- Poems - Submit up 1-3 poems
- Prose - Submit 1 piece of work no longer than 4,500 words (If you go over a bit we won’t mind)
- Visual media - Submit 1-5 pieces of visual media
- We seek work that pays homage to the early 1980s, especially the early prints of WET Magazine, i-D Magazine, and the breakthroughs in technology in the late 20th century. These works attempt to make sense of anxiety and fear in an age of constantly changing digital creation.
If you can say this about the piece or feel it falls under these categories, we’d love to see you submit it here; especially if it fits into multiple:
- Campy
- Eccentric
- In-your-face
- Politically motivated
- Misguided direction
- Empowerment (without a million clichés)
- Sex, love, romance
